How to Apply for Guest Studies at the University of Jena



Who may apply?

  • students (Bachelor/Master) of international partner universities
  • students (Bachelor/Master) of Erasmus+ partner universities
  • scholarship holders of DAAD, Fulbright
  • international doctoral candidates (must be enrolled in a PhD programme at their home university)
  • all applicants should have completed at least 1 yaer of their present study programme and must remain enrolled students at their home university while studying abroad.

Language requirements

On nomination, students must show their ability to speak the language of instruction sufficiently. The Friedrich Schiller University Jena does not require any test certificates, but recommends that students should know German on the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages in order to follow the course instructions, fulfill course requirements and be able to communicate with lecturers, supervisors and peer students. For those attending courses, or conducting a research project, in English, knowledge of the English language at the B2/C1 level is required.

Aim of stay

1. Participation in regular study courses (minimum 4 hrs/week or 10 ECTS):  Before coming to Jena, guest students should have completed a Learning Agreement. For more information on programmes for guest students and the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), please go to In case they intend to interrupt their studies in Jena or leave the university earlier, they have to catch up with the International Office at their home university. Guest students will only receive a Confirmation of Stay if they attend classes regularly throughout the semester.

2. Guest student's research project (in a FSU Jena department): The nomination must contain a Supervision Agreement for Guest Students. Regular attendance at the department and regular meetings with the host supervisor ar expected and required  for a Confirmation of Stay. Information for host institutes (pdf)

3. Guest doctoral candidate's research project (in a FSU Jena department): Send your Agreement for Guest doctoral candidates to the Graduate Academy. Regular attendance at the department and regular meetings with the host supervisor are expected. Information for host institutes (pdf)


There are no tuition fees. Guest students must pay the regular semester contribution (for the Semester ticket). When staying up to 6 months, the semester contribution for one semester has to be paid. When staying up to 12 months, the semester contribution for two semesters has to be paid. For details see the Applicant's Guide. If guest students want to participate in extra-curricular activities (e.g. language courses, sports), the usual fees will apply. FSU Jena requires students to take out a valid European health insurance or German public health insurance.


1. Bachelor-/Masters students: Applicants must be nominated by their home university by sending the following data to the FSU Jena International Office (see sample list):

  • surnames, given names
  • sex
  • date and place of birth
  • nationality
  • email
  • period of stay
  • study programme at home university
  • degree aimed at
  • Erasmus code of home university
  • Research projects: the nomination should include a copy of the Supervision Agreement for Guest Students

The nomination must be sent by the home university to

  • in May-June for the next winter semester (1 Oct - 31 March) or full academic year
  • in November-December for the next summer semester (1 Apr - 30 Sept).

2. Guest doctoral candidates: Send a completed  Agreement for Guest doctoral candidates to the Jena Graduate Academy 2 months before the start of your planned stay at the latest.




After being nominated, Bachelor/Masters students will be invited by FSU Jena to the application portal.

The application papers have to be sent

  • by 15 July for the coming winter semester (1 October-31 March) or the entire academic year
  • by 15 January for the coming summer semester (1 April-30 September)
