Learning German in the non-teaching period has been attracting students, doctoral candidates, international staff and guests of the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena for some semesters now. For this reason, the Staff Development Department, in close cooperation with the Language Center, is offering intensive courses in German language for beginners. These 40-hour courses will take place between September 18th and October 13th 2012.

Course range extended to the language levels A 1 and A 2

For the first time, there are also two more courses offered that lead to the level A 2 in addition to the established ones at level A 1. The course contents follow the same program as the language courses offered within the semester by the Language Center. Therefore, it is also possible to continue learning German without any gap after completing the intensive course. "This is absolutely new," says the head of the Language Center Dr. Boldt. "For the first time, international scientists, students, staff members and guests with low German proficiency are able to reach the break-through level A 2 within only one year by combining our structured course offers. Especially for the international audience, it is important to possess at least this level in order to cope with daily life independently. This is the foundation to feeling comfortable with life in Jena and at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität."

Work-friendly course times and attractive pricing

All intensive courses will take place for four weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Additionally, there are also lessons on the first two Saturdays in October.  "For us, it is very important that our courses do not conflict with the normal working times," says head of the Staff Development Department of the Dezernat 1 of the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, Ines Tresenreuter, explaining the course times. "Also, at 85 Euros for staff members, scientists and guests, we offer an attractive pricing. Students and doctoral students to the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität pay only 30 Euros," she adds. Moreover, in many cases, course fees can be partly refunded through the staff development budgets of the institutes or the central administration of the university.
