Reg. Nr. 121/2020

Fristende: 28.05.2020

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena connects: People and ideas, science and business, universities and non-university research. Rooted in the heart of Germany and linked to the whole world, it shapes Jena's character as a future-oriented and cosmopolitan city.

At the Chair of Genetics, in the Matthias Schleiden Institute, of the Faculty for Biological Sciences, the position of a

Research Assistant  (m,f,d)

is available on 01. July 2020, or later, until the position is filled. The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours).

Research at the Chair of Genetics is focused on the evolutionary developmental biology of plants, with special emphasis on MADS-box transcription factors, miRNAs, flowers and fruits.

The Ph.D. student will work on the project "MADS life on MAdLand: the role of MADS-box gene transcription factors in the transition of plants to land". The work occurs in the context of the DFG priority program 2237 "MAdLand - Molecular Adaptation to Land: plant evolution to change" (http://madland.science).

We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student to strengthen our international and collaborative team. The specific project examines the molecular evolution of MADS-domain transcription factor interactions during the transitions of plants to land (for a primer, see Theißen et al. (2016), Development 143, 3259-3271). The project integrates techniques of phylogenetics, plant molecular biology and molecular biophysics with transgenic and genome editing studies in the liverwort model species Marchantia polymorpha.

The successful applicant will hold an MSc-degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry or a related field, and will have good knowledge of molecular biology and English language. Previous experience with the model system M. polymorpha, and of bioinformatics as well as knowledge of German language are of advantage.
