The Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy seeks to fill a position as

PhD student / researcher

in the Emmy Noether junior research group "Building quantum space-time: spin foam models and the renormalization group" led by Dr. Sebastian Steinhaus. The application deadline is 15.11.2019 (or until the position has been filled). The start date is 01.01.2020.

The junior research group investigates so-called spin foam models, a path integral approach to quantum gravity. The goal of the group is to uncover the properties this quantum space-time and establish its connection general relativity. To this end, numerical methods and the renormalization group play the key role. The candidate will benefit from the stimulating working environment provided by the Institute for Theoretical Physics as well as by the structural PhD programme / Graduiertenkolleg 2522 "Strong Dynamics and Criticality in Quantum and Gravitational Systems".

Job description:

  • Research in the field of theoretical physics / quantum gravity, in particular spin foam models and the renormalization group
  • Co-supervision of bachelor students
  • Teaching assistance (tutorials)
  • Additionally the applicant is expected to persue a doctorate

Qualification requirements:

  • Completed graduate studies (master / diploma) in physics
  • established proficiency in theoretical physics, in particular quantum gravity and quantum field theory as well as computational physics if applicable
  • pedagogical skills
  • ability to work independently and good self Organisation

The selected PhD Student will receive a three-year position according to the German public service salary scale (E13 TV-L 50%).
