The Division for Applied Geology of the Institute for Geosciences at the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences  seeks to fill the position of a

 

Scientific Researcher Geosciences (m/f/d)

 

 

commencing on March 2022. or the earliest possible starting date thereafter

We offer a part-time position (50%, 20 hours per week), (initially) limited until 31. August 2024.

 

The Applied Geology Group researches basic environmental processes, especially the relations, interactions and feedbacks between the litho-, pedo-, hydro- and biospheres. The position should be filled within the collaborative project RENA which focus on the biological radionuclide removal of contaminated soils using natural association processes to develop a method for the ex-situ treatment of soils originating from the dismantling of nuclear facilities. Investigations on the following topics will be performed by the Applied Geology group:

  • Mineralogy, clay mineral matrix, organic material of the soil
  • Hydrodynamics and rooting (plants, fungi)
  • Small-scale plant experiments for phytoremediation
  • Reactive Transport Modelling

As our new Doctoral Researcher you will play a vital role in ensuring the success of our project by performing pore space characterization and analysis of reactive transport processes in soils using petrographic and tomographic methods (including LA-ICP-MS, µCT).

 

Your responsibilities:

  • Pore space characterization of the various geological starting materials
  • Design, carry out and analyse hydrodynamic experiments and geo-/chemical analyses
  • Work on your own scientific qualification project (doctorate)
  • Publishing results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Willingness to travel to conferences to present results, as well as to collaborators

 

Your profile:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in Geology/Mineralogy, Biogeosciences, Geo-/Chemistry, Soil Science, Environmental Science or a related discipline
  • Ideally, you have basic knowledge in sedimentary petrography, in the analysis of porous materials including visualization and image analysis of tomographic data and data processing (e.g. Python, R, C++)
  • Experience with mass spectrometry (e.g. ICP-MS) and their application in soil science as well as knowledge handling of colloid characterization techniques would be desirable
  • Basic skills in geochemical or transport modelling (e.g. PHREEQC) are an advantage
  • Excellent technical skills in the operation of complex instruments and their adaptation to measurement requirements
  • Enthusiasm to play an active role in the interdisciplinary research team of RENA and the Applied Geology group
  • Highly motivated and creative personalities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

This is a part-time position with 50% (20 hours per week) of the working hours of a full-time employee.
