Scientific Employee in Data & Code Curation (f/m/d)

 

commencing on 1 January 2022 or the earliest possible starting date thereafter.


Background

The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National Research Centre funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in this emerging field. It is jointly hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the University of Leipzig (UL), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). Within iDiv the Biodiversity Data and Code Unit (iBID) provides support on all matters related to data and code management. Our aim is to support FAIR data, a move towards Open Science, and the development of open source software. The Data & Code Curator will work closely with the other members of iBID and by contributing to  a Helpdesk will be one of the faces of iBID to its users, both within iDiv and externally.

Your responsibilities:

  • Advise and support other scientists with different degrees of data literacy on data publication in scientific journals
  • Day-to-day management of the iDiv Data Portal, and contribute to setting up other long-term data archives
  • Advise and support on reproducible science principles (e.g. R code publication and workflows)
  • Contribute to iDiv data policy implementation
  • Contribute to the development of workshops and training about Open Science
  • Support in preparing synthesis datasets within iDiv projects including sDiv working groups
  • Participation in acquiring third party funding for research data management

Your profile:

  • Applicants should possess (or anticipate soon receiving) a PhD in (quantitative) ecology or a related discipline.
  • Experience in research data management, and an interest in data governance, are an advantage. Equivalent data handling experience outside academia will also be considered
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Good attention to detail
  • Familiarity with scrutinizing and documenting source code (e.g. R or Python) is a strong plus
  • Interest and ability in interdisciplinary collaboration with a diverse team of ecologists and computer scientists
  • Team player with strong organizational skills and an interest in helping others

The position is initially limited until 30 September 2024.

This is a part-time position with 50 - 80% of the working hours of a full-time employee (20 - 32 hours per week). The work place will be at iDiv in Leipzig.
